Los especialistas de la salud siempre sugieren que lo más recomendable es dormir ocho horas diarias. Sin embargo dada la rutina diaria y el ritmo acelerado que llevamos todos, tener una buena calidad de sueño se ha vuelto un tema bastante prescindible en nuestras vidas.





En los últimos años mientras se acortan las horas de sueño, los niveles de diabetes y sobrepeso han aumentado, pero ¿qué tan relacionados están estos fenómenos? 
Un estudio realizado en la Universidad de Surrey reunió a 7 voluntarios, quienes normalmente duermen de 6 a 9 horas. Los voluntarios se dividieron en dos grupos, a uno se le pidió dormir 6 horas y media, y al otro 7 horas y media. Una semana después los investigadores tomaron muestras de sangre.


Lo que descubrieron fue que cuando los voluntarios dormían una hora menos, los genes asociados con procesos como inflamación, respuesta inmune y respuesta al estrés se volvían menos activos. También se notó un incremento en la actividad de los genes asociados con la diabetes y el riesgo de cáncer. Lo contrario ocurría cuando se añadía una hora de sueño.
